          Mentawai tribe is the name of one of the tribes that settled in the Mentawai Islands, Siberut Island, West Sumatra. The famous Mentawai Tribe community still relies fully on nature and lives far from modern civilization. This tribe is known as a reliable concoction. A typical tradition is the use of tattoos throughout the body related to the role and social status of users, besides that some traditions and rituals that are still carried out by the Mentawai people can be unique and have a high philosophy of life, one of which is the Sikerei tradition.

         Sikerei or nickname for shamans in the Mentawai tribe. Sikerei is a person who is believed to have high spiritual strength and closeness to ancestral spirits to cure various diseases. The process of curing a sick person is usually carried out by the Sikerei by giving medicinal herbs and followed by a special dance called Turuk, this dance is believed to be the dance of the callers of ancestral spirits. A Sikerei is believed to be a mediator whose duty is to maintain the smooth flow of communication between tribal residents and the ancestral spirits. The life of the indigenous Mentawai people cannot be separated from the belief in spirits or the unseen realms. Every object is believed to have spirit and soul. The relationship between humans and spirits must be maintained properly so that harmony is created, one way is by sikerei assistance that is connected with the realms of the spirits.
       The Mentawai tribe community believes when someone is mentally ill, from himself leaving his body that Sikerei will be tasked with recalling the sick person's soul. Therefore a Sikerei plays an important role in the life of the Mentawai people. In addition to experts in medicine, Sikerei was also given the trust to be a leader in every traditional ceremony, starting from the ceremony of death, birth, going to the fields and hunting into the forest.
